About Ravenna/Bryant
Ravenna real estate ranges from modest bungalows and university faculty homes, to the posher precincts of Laurelhurst and Windermere, where mini-mansions (and some bona fide ones) command impressive views of Lake Washington and the Cascades. Laurelhurst occupies a prime view location, on a hilly peninsula poking into Lake Washington. Microsoft magnate Bill Gates got his first taste of the well-appointed life growing up in the area -- first in View Ridge and then in Laurelhurst, the son of a prominent downtown lawyer.
Popular parks and some airplane firsts In 1855, surveyors dubbed the Sand Point Peninsula "Mud Lake." But pioneers settled amid the swamps anyway. Near the turn of the century, a shipyard, mill, post office and a school were built near the peninsula's Pontiac Bay. The swamps dried up in 1917 when the Lake Washington Ship Canal opened and lowered the lake by 8 feet. Three years later, King County bought Sand Point for a landing strip and sold it to the federal government. The land served as a U.S. Naval Air Station until 1991. Sand Point boasts some notable airplane landmarks. Bill Boeing flew his first airplane there, and in 1921 the first flight around the world landed on the peninsula.
The neighborhood is generally defined as the area bounded on the north by Northeast 95th Street, on the west by 35th Avenue Northeast and Lake City Way, on the south by Union Bay and on the east by Lake Washington.
Two of Seattle's most popular parks, Matthews Beach and Magnuson Park, are located on Sand Point. The rock band Soundgarden got its name from a wind-chime sculpture at Magnuson. The Sand Point Peninsula is made up of several neighborhoods. View Ridge is an affluent area with immaculate lawns and views of the Cascades. The Children's Orthopedic Hospital on Sand Point Way is nationally recognized for its care. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center also is located here. It is the largest federal research center and it studies weather and its impact on coastlines.
Ravenna real estate is dominated by single family homes, some dating back to the turn of the century but more commonly mid-century homes. Being close to the University of Washington makes Ravenna real estate convenient for students and faculty alike.
